Individual Volunteers

Rebuilding Together Oakland relies on your generosity to ensure that our low-income community members live independently in safety and warmth. Whether you volunteer on a project site or in the office or warehouse, you will make a difference as we work together to rehabilitate homes and community facilities for our neighbors in need.

General Volunteers provide critical support for our rebuilding days. Our sponsors recruit the majority of our volunteers and also provide the leadership for the workday. If you would like to volunteer but you are not associated with a sponsoring organization, then we will identify a work site for you based on the greatest need. We ask for some flexibility regarding your project location and time because some of our greatest needs may come with only a week's notice. Our requirements include energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to tackle any task and get dirty. The time commitment is from 8:00 a.m. to about 4:00 p.m. on the project day.

Non-Construction Volunteers

There are many opportunities for volunteers off the worksite.
Office volunteers serve in a number of capacities and help us to prepare for Rebuilding Days. Activities include running errands, organizing our volunteer and sponsor appreciation parties, data entry, and community outreach. The time commitment for National Rebuilding Day is from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Time commitments for other office activities are flexible.

Previewers work with Rebuilding Together Oakland staff to assess applicants and recommend projects for Rebuilding Days. To volunteer as a Previewer, you will first need to volunteer for at least two of our construction projects and have a clear understanding of Rebuilding Together Oakland's mission and the types of projects that qualify for our assistance. In addition, Previewers commit to 20 to 30 hours of support between November and January for training and reviewing potential projects.

Warehouse volunteers help us organize, inventory, and maintain our materials and supplies. Time commitments are flexible.

Workday photographers capture the Rebuilding Together Oakland experience through photography and video.  If you have a "good eye" and your own digital camera, you can volunteer to take pictures and document the October and April workdays. The photos taken on those days are used for this website as well as other marketing materials. Also, if you are handy with Adobe Photoshop, photo retouching is needed throughout the year.

Safety coordinators ensure that all work performed at the work site is done in a safe manner. This person must take preventative measures, such as watching for tripping and falling hazards, ladder safety issues and safe paint prepping practices.

Safe-At-Home Volunteers

Volunteers with our Safe-At-Home program work on their own schedule to make important safety improvements to the homes of Oakland's seniors and individuals with disabilities.  This is a great opportunity to provide a vital service that keeps people safely in their homes.

*    Set Your Own Schedule - Schedule a time convenient to you and the homeowner in need.

*    Volunteer 2-3 hours once a month - Installing the smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, grab bars and other items takes about 2 hours.

*    No Skills Needed - We will train you to use a cordless drill to screw items to the walls of the homeowner in need.
